Ode to a Public Hearing. A poem for Mayor and Council.

Mayor and Council, in you we trust
To determine, if or if not, we must
Amend our official community plan
I’m here to ask you, to take a stand

Against a future of big box stuff
Where Cheap and plenty is never enough

To change a city and the future entrust
To big corporations with power and bucks
Who’ll pave over the landscape, and banish the ducks?

But Joking aside. The truth is unjust
Mass consumerism is killing us.
Check the market, bust, boom, bust
Check the weather.
Has the globe warmed enough?

But really, who are we
And what makes us, us?
A town full of stores
And Stores full of stuff?

This town is made up of so much more
Its people and places and memories galore.
Its hillside and green space, a lake AND a shore.

And every voice matters
No matter how small.
Please don’t pave the land.
Please don’t build this mall.
